I have great respect for FORTUNE and Time Inc. They are big, stellar, proven brands. And FORTUNE still produces some of the best extended feature articles about the tech industry. But when I visited FORTUNE’s tech blog this morning, I was stunned.
As of noon eastern today (February 1), FORTUNE’s most recent tech blog headline was “What If Google Misses?” The entry was posted on January 30. Since that time, the entire world of search has changed. Google’s earnings did miss, Google’s stock did plummet, and now Microsoft is bidding for Yahoo!
FORTUNE’s inability to update a prominent tech blog provides a critical reminder to everyone in Web 2.0 land. If you don’t have the time, energy and focus to deliver current perspectives to readers, you run the risk of becoming painfully outdated in a matter of days, hours or even minutes.
Finally, at 2:07 p.m. today FORTUNE weighed in with some perspective on Microsoft-Yahoo! Great, but millions of eyeballs have already gone elsewhere to get analysis on (A) Google’s earnings and (B) the Microsoft-Yahoo! negotiations.
