It has been nearly two months since Amy and I launched Nine Lives Media Inc. As we near our third month of business, we’re starting to piece together our third media site.
Let me recap the story for you so far. Amy and I incorporated Nine Lives Media Inc. in January 2008 … yada, yada, yada … and we now have two media platforms (MSPmentor and The VAR Guy) that are attracting highly targeted IT audiences and sponsors. I’ve skipped the gory details, because I’m saving those for my memoir.
There is one key detail I will share: To build a successful blog or social media business, you need to have passion for the topics and industries you’re covering/serving. And you need to unite an audience of readers and vendors that otherwise can’t find one another.
Our next media site certainly fits that description. It’s called…
…All About Ubuntu (www.allaboutubuntu.com).
Most people have never heard of Ubuntu, but the Linux crowd certainly has. Ubuntu is now the fastest-growing version of Linux for PC desktops, and we expect it to become quite popular on servers and mobile devices.
There are some highly-technical Ubuntu blogs on the Web. We applaud them. But All About Ubuntu is a media site for the rest of us: Windows users, school administrators, small business owners and corporate executives who want to know if there’s a secure, reliable, intuitive, low-cost alternative to Windows.
This isn’t about bashing Microsoft. Rather, it’s about celebrating customer choice and helping readers to accelerate their move to one of the most dependable, most intuitive open source platforms we’ve ever seen. (By the way, I’m writing this blog entry using a Dell PC that runs Ubuntu.)
If you visit AllAboutUbuntu.com, you’ll notice the site is filled with content but doesn’t have many “bells and whistles” right now. I’ve been mulling the site concept in my head for almost a year. And as usual, Amy — a sales expert — kept weighing in with good editorial ideas. Go figure.
All About Ubuntu is in its infancy. More content is on the way, thanks to a fantastic list of Ubuntu contributors who will join the site in March.
Jump over to our other media sites (MSPmentor.net and TheVARguy.com) and you’ll get some hints about how we may evolve All About Ubuntu’s design and community features.
But don’t take things too literally. Amy and I are constantly tweaking and enhancing our current sites. And we’ve got a few additional surprises in store for All About Ubuntu.
