At Nine Lives Media Inc., my partner Joe Panettieri and I take part in daily conversations about cloud computing and what it means to our industry. When we talk cloud computing, we are usually talking about hosting IT technologies on the Internet or ‘in the cloud.’
Interestingly, we experienced a new form of cloud computing this month and I’m not sure if it’s a good, or not so good, thing for business.
On a cross-country flight, Joe called me from the air through Skype. The connection wasn’t great, but we shared a few words. Throughout the five hours that I expected to have what I refer to as ‘partner-silence,’ I continued to receive a stream of emails from Joe. American Airways now offers WiFi on some of their planes. And Joe took full advantage.
- Terrific – now business people can stay in constant contact with the outside world when traveling.
- Horrific – now business people can stay in constant contact with the outside world when traveling.
Technology will continue to improve and our opportunities for constant contact will become more ubiquitous. But, where is the line between being in touch and taking a much earned break?
This type of cloud computing – well, I’m not so sure I’m all for it.
