PC Magazine Is Dead, Long Live PCMag.com

19 11 2008

A few days ago I explained why Nine Lives Media Inc. would never launch a print magazine (unless someone paid us a handsome bounty to do so).

Now comes word that PC Magazine will distribute its final print edition in January 2009, becoming an online-only publication thereafter.

Nobody should be surprised by this move. PC Magazine’s parent, Ziff Davis Media, hinted in multiple SEC filings that the company was strongly considering a move to online-only distribution. And we all know how painful the print IT magazine business has become.

Thank you for the memories, PC Magazine. Long live PCmag.com.

Truly sad. I remember when my dad used to bring home PC Mag in the 80’s and it was like a dictionary size every month. Then, working there in the early 2000’s, it was still doing ok but not too that level. And now, today. Sign of the times.

Howard: Definitely sad to hear about the print pub I think I’ve become less and less emotional about this type of news. I was editor of a print publication Ziff shut down in 2001.

The slow death of print has forced me (and my business partner) to learn a range of new skills.

The folks behind Nine Lives Media Inc. have done everything from running big tech events to managing online advertising systems to mastering search engine optimization.

IT media has a choice: Change or die. Nine Lives Media Inc. will always embrace change.
